As a custom builder of coastal homes I often deal with the many exterior challenges builders and homeowners have to consider. Generally one way or another the underlying concern comes back to durability and related maintenance issues. Insisting on traditional materials and techniques results in an end product that often requires regular and costly upkeep. There seems little choice but to use less desirable materials and products, such as vinyl siding and railings, resulting in an inferior building aesthetic and overall quality. This blog documents different ways I have been successful at maintaining the integrity of traditional construction methods while avoiding long-term maintenance concerns.
